Wiki Recipes:Becoming an Admin

An Admin does the best they can to keep the site running smoothly. Here is how to become an Admin:

  • Use edit summaries properly. They should be used to describe and clarify edits. Do not use misleading summaries, such as writing "spell check" when you are actually vandalizing an article.
  • Be kind to other users. Being kind is not only the golden rule in real life, but on wikis too! Thinking about what you type before you hit "post" shows you are caring about everyone's feelings, not just your own. Think it may be offensive or mean? Don't post it.
  • Be clear and concise when stating a point. Nobody should have to guess what you're talking about. This means using proper spelling and grammar, but also getting to the point. If you are an admin, you may be put into situations where you need to reason with another User. Instead of skirting around the issue, be direct and get to the points you want to make. Remember this: say what you mean and mean what you say.
  • Show a history of spectacular editing. Nobody becomes an admin on their first day, week, or even month! It takes months (even years for some) to become an admin. If you are really striving for adminship, make sure you have the good editing history on your side.
  • Be a good listener. If you don't take the time to actually read someone's post all the way through, that shows you don't really care. Don't just read a post, comprehend it. Take in the facts. Care about the message they bring to you.
  • Participate in NFD discussions. Show your knowledge of the deletion policy by explaining why the article should be deleted or not. The article will eventually get reviewed by an administrator, who will decide to keep or delete the page.
  • Apply for adminship. Add your name on the Nominations for Adminship page. Your request will eventually be reviewed by an existing Admin, who will ask you some questions. That Admin will let you know if you are selected once he/she gets the answers to your questions. If you don't get selected, wait at least 1 month to reapply.
